Some background for first-timers
Auditions are open to anyone over the age of 18 or in their senior year of high school. We have performed a Gilbert and Sullivan opera (or operetta) every year since 1952, and we have grown during that period to become internationally recognized for our productions. (You can read more about our successes elsewhere on this web site). Attendance at a pre-audition sing-through is not required; however, participation in one [or both] will give you a sense of what the opera is all about, and how we begin our annual preparations for the season's production.
Why sing [and act and dance a little] with us?
We guarantee that you will perform in a first-class, traditional production of this opera.
You will:
- master your role under the stage direction of Alistair Donkin, who was one the lead performers of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company before it folded in 1982. Alistair's comedic skills on stage are matched by his wit when giving direction. Alistair has led us to one first place and two second place awards in our three trips to the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England.
- stretch your vocal chords with Music Director Brian Runnels; Chorus Master Rob Seible; Accompaniests Dace Glischard and Bill Glick; and a group of dedicated performers like yourself. The [G and S] experience of the singers and actors in last year's performance of Ruddygore ranged from one to 30 years. Many of them perform with Houston Grand Opera, Opera in the Heights and other opera companies.
- perform in front of a knowlegable, appreciative audience. Many of our ticket buyers and patrons have seen nearly every production since they attended their first; some for as many as fifty, and many for more than ten - twenty.
- work hard, learn a lot, establish new friendships with people having similar interests, and have fun.
We look forward to meeting you!
